The
Emerald Empire Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America
is a 4-Star Chapter representing Active Duty, Reserve and National Guard
officers (current, retired and former) within the Eugene-Springfield,
Roseburg, Florence area of Oregon
The Retired Officers Club of the Emerald Empire was organized in late
1965 and became a chartered affiliate of The Retired Officers
Association (TROA) on 11 May 1966. There were 75 charter members led by
LTC Thomas A. Redlingshafer, MAJ Lamar Peeples, LCDR Louis W. Bell and
COL Sidney Jenkins. LTC Tom Redlingshafer was elected as the first Club
President. In 1977 the club was incorporated as a nonprofit organization
under the laws of the State of Oregon.
The objectives and purposes of the club as expressed in the original
constitution are primarily patriotic and social. Occasional nonpartisan
political activity is undertaken where the rights and interests of
active, retired and former members of the various services are
concerned. In order to achieve its objectives, the club has actively
participated in the Oregon Council of Chapters of MOAA and is associated
with the Oregon Council of Federal Retired Organizations.
In recent years, TROA recognized the need to tackle head-on the
challenges facing the association today: the gradual loss of our valued
World War II veterans, a declining pool of eligible officers from which
to recruit, and a new generation of officers reluctant to join a
"retired" organization. Members recognize that the larger and more
active the association's membership, the greater its influence will be
on all issues.
Accordingly, on 1 January 2003, the name of the organization was changed
to MILITARY OFFICERS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA. The new name clearly
identifies who we represent. No longer will someone ask if members are
police officers, park rangers, or border patrol officers. MOAA will be
known widely for the elite organization it is, comprised of retired,
active and former officers of the seven uniformed services who have
served this nation. The new name also will enhance the strong
relationships TROA has fostered through the years on Capitol Hill and
elsewhere thanks to the hard work of the dedicated members and staff.
